Despite its location on the outskirts of the city in a very ordinary suburban street, it’s a sociable place, and I nearly always end up talking to the next table. In the summer, you’ll want to bag a table outside ‑ cocktail in hand you can almost imagine you’re on holiday. When I left Norfolk, the market mainly housed terrible handbags, luggage, and incense stalls. Now it’s home to fantastic fresh produce including fruit, veg, cheese and herbs, and it’s a great spot to pick up some lunch. Every time I go I try something new ‑ Italian, Spanish, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese - and they’ve also got great vegan and gluten-free options. This place is much loved by all locals, and the queue (particularly on a big night like fireworks) can be quite astonishing. Unlike most fish and chip places, you’re not going to just stick to the classic battered haddock ‑ you’re more likely to convince everyone you’re with to each go for something different so you can try as much of the menu as possible. I love the battered mackerel, the soft shell crab bap, and all the homemade dips. You’ll want to dress up a little, but it’s definitely not stuffy. I hear the Beef Wellington is excellent but I’ve always missed it on the menu when I’ve been. I met my husband there (a drummer) and we had some amazing years making the most of London and also travelling the world. These days we still love music and gig occasionally, but we’re both freelance consultants (him in sports events, me in marketing) and after having our son, we really wanted to address the work/life balance and have a home in the countryside where we could live some version of the good life! We found this house in 2019 and after seeing the garden, river, and the annexe (soon after named the riverside retreat) we knew it was the home for us. We’ve spent the last couple of years working on the house and the garden, and still have so many plans including hosting supper-clubs and art workshops.
