Restaurant Recommendations

Growing up in Norfolk, I can’t remember any restaurants of note - maybe it was down to the lacking gastronomic era or I wasn’t paying attention but essentially if you were going out for a meal it would be at a pub or a restaurant chain and the food wouldn’t be anything to comment on. However something happened in Norwich while I was away in London for 12 years. Up popped the pop-ups, independent restaurants emerged, and the iconic city market underwent a major rebrand - becoming Norwich’s street food central hub. I’ve spent the last two years thoroughly enjoying eating my way around the city and its outskirts and so I’ll share some recommendations that I hope will be useful to you during your stay.

City Centre and Outskirts

Woolf & Social

So this is my favourite. Not just because of the delicious food (always order the fried chicken, always order the pickles) but because a night there is guaranteed to be a good one. Despite its location on the outskirts of the city in a very ordinary suburban street, it’s a sociable place, and I nearly always end up talking to the next table. In the summer, you’ll want to bag a table outside ‑ cocktail in hand you can almost imagine you’re on holiday.

Plus if restaurant critic recommendations sway you, Marina O’Loughlin said of her visit: “when food starts arriving, it’s clear there’s genuine talent.” We agree!

Benedict’s

This is a firm favourite for many in the city, with chef Richard Bainbridge known as bit of a local legend! The general vibe is very understated and cool, and better yet the food is absolutely delicious, seasonal, and always with an unexpected twist. Andy and I went just before Christmas and had the 7 course menu and enjoyed it immensely. St Benedict’s street is also great for a wander, with vintage and vinyl shops aplenty.

Benedict’s even offer ‘Dine at Home’ Ready Meals - perfect for ordering ahead to the retreat if you fancy a night in.

Blue Joanna

This is absolutely one of my favourite places to spend an evening in Norwich. Not only is the food incredible (asian/mexican style street food) but the owners play their own selection of vinyl all evening and the cocktails are rather moreish in an environment with such good vibes. Book ahead, go and be merry!

Roger Hickman’s

For special occasions and serious foodies, Roger Hickman’s has long been considered as one of the main spots for fine dining in Norwich. The venue is small, intimate and homely and both times I’ve been, I’ve loved the taster menu with the accompanying wine flight.

St Giles is also a lovely area of Norwich to explore - with gorgeous independent shops and two of the best cafés in town - Kofra and Bread Source.

Norwich Market

The market has changed so much in the last twenty years. When I left Norfolk, the market mainly housed terrible handbags, luggage, and incense stalls. Now it’s home to fantastic fresh produce including fruit, veg, cheese and herbs, and it’s a great spot to pick up some lunch. Every time I go I try something new ‑ Italian, Spanish, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese - and they’ve also got great vegan and gluten-free options. Go to the top of the market and sit out on the small garden that overlooks the whole market ‑ the perfect spot for people‑watching.

Grosvenor Fish Bar

Now you may be inclined to skip city centre chippies for fear the fish has travelled too far - but with The Grosvenor you’d be missing out. This place is much loved by all locals, and the queue (particularly on a big night like fireworks) can be quite astonishing.

Unlike most fish and chip places, you’re not going to just stick to the classic battered haddock ‑ you’re more likely to convince everyone you’re with to each go for something different so you can try as much of the menu as possible. I love the battered mackerel, the soft shell crab bap, and all the homemade dips. You can also get them to deliver - they have an independent delivery service as well as Uber Eats.

The Wildebeest

Situated just outside of Norwich (about a 7 min drive from the property) The Wilderbeest offers excellent seasonal food in an upmarket pub setting. You’ll want to dress up a little, but it’s definitely not stuffy. I hear the Beef Wellington is excellent but I’ve always missed it on the menu when I’ve been. I have to be honest and say that I don’t rate it as highly as other restaurants in Norwich for innovation or value, but guests and friends have consistently booked it for special occasions and been impressed - it has a lovely ambience and offers a traditional fine dining experience.

Other restaurants that I’d recommend include:

  • Cafe 33 - the most popular spot in Norwich for brunch! For guests with kids I would recommend their second cafe in Chapelfield Gardens NR2 1NY

  • Farmyard - really I should write a full review as this place deserves it! Fresh seasonal produce, great service!

  • XO Kitchen - absolutely delicious asian fusion food - great cocktails, great desserts!

  • Jorge’s (portuguese tapas)

  • Store - I haven’t been but friends have recommended it. Recently awarded a Michelin star!

Vegan or Vegetarian picks

  • River Green Restaurant (highly recommended)

  • Namaste Village (vegetarian indian restaurant on our side of town)

  • Tofurei

  • The Tipsy Vegan

  • Erpingham House

Takeaway Suggestions

  • Take Thai - our absolute favourite takeaway. You need to order direct and unfortunately they don’t accept card so you’ll have to have cash ready for the delivery driver. Or you can collect and pay via card at collection. Order early as the telephone line is constantly busy and it’s always about an hour’s wait (but worth it)

  • Dhaba15 - In our opinion the best Indian food in Norwich. The menu is really interesting and it’s never disappointed! I believe you can order direct but we always order through Deliveroo.

  • Little Pie Patisserie - The lovely Katie offers general catering & supper club hosting. Our guests have loved her date night and buffet boxes.
